On hearing the news, I had to ask myself yet again, how many more fucking times does this need to happen? Omaha, Virginia Tech, and now this (with plenty of other less publicized shootings in between). Not only can the NRA go fuck itself for blocking sane gun control legislation, the Democrats can fuck themselves sideways for running away from the issue like the useless cowards that they are.

Hey Einstein: Illinois already has strict gun control laws. How is adding more going to keep criminals and nutjobs from obtaining guns? NIU was a GUN FREE ZONE. Do you know what that means? It means that the only people who don't have guns are the VICTIMS. How many lives might be saved if Illinois students and residents were allowed to carry arms and PROTECT THEMSELVES??
1. Obviously gun laws in Illinois aren't strict enough! What I'm thinking of goes well beyond the current half measures. Let's face it, guns ought to be licensed and strictly regulated. We don't let any yahoo drive a car, do we? Then why be so loose on who gets to buy deadly weapons? I'm not against people owning guns, but it ought not be an absolute right.
2. Giving more people guns will not prevent these things from happening, quite the contrary. In countries with tighter gun regulations events like this are much more rare. Guns are very easy to obtain in this country compared to most others (and even to carry concealed in many states), and guess what, it doesn't seem to deter stuff like this, it enables it. Giving more people guns just increases the chances that someone will get shot accidentally, commit suicide, or that they'll turn fights and disagreements deadly.

You are statistically much more likely to blow away a member of your family than a intruder into your home or a crazed gunmen like the one at NIU or VT. Think about it: how many times do you encounter dangerous criminals compared to how many times you beef with your friends or family over bullshit? Romantic fantasies aside, the latter is much more likely, and having a deadly weapon readily available doesn't help.
By the way, put your last minute money on Taylor for middleweight championship of the world. Not that a man of letters does such things....
